In Part 2 of my AI workstation build, it is time to put the AMD Threadripper 9960X and PNY GeForce RTX 5080 Slim with TeamGroup T-CREATE MASTER R-DIMM 4x 16GB to work running local AI! I'm testing seven local LLMs - Llama 3.1:8B, Qwen3:8B, DeepSeek-R1:8B and 14B, Mistral:7B, Mistral Nemo:12B, and Gemma3:4B — comparing CPU-only performance against GPU-accelerated inference. We'll look at generation speed, prompt processing, first-token latency, temperatures and clock speeds to see how different models perform and just how much the RTX 5080 can accelerate local AI.
